Blog # 3

1. My teacher hardly has a classroom management plan. It seems to me that her plan simply consists of screaming at the studnets all day. She uses a green, yellow and red star. At the beginning of the day all the studnets names begin on green, if they misbehave their name goes to yellow, then to red. It most definatley is NOT a positive plan!

2. One thing that my teacher does, is she has a book basket at each table for the studnets to use during independent reading. This prevents studnets from getting out of their seat and wandering around the room to find a book. They already have a small selection right there at their seats. Another thing my teacher does is she collects the students boxes of crayons while they are not using them. If the crayon boxes stay on the tables while the studnets are not using them they become distracted and fiddle with their boxes and crayons and tend to not pay attention.

3. Classroom Management Plan:
   a. Guiding Prinicples:
        1. Students should have good behaviors modeled for them so they know what to do.
        2. Classroom management should ONLY be positive!
        3. Students will only be acknowledged for good behavior.
   b. Classroom Set-up
I will have the desks in groups so that 4 students will sit at each desk. They will be spread out evenly among the room, but their needs to be plenty of space in the front of the classroom for me to stand and use the white board. My desk will be in the front of the room but off to the side. I think this creates an unspoken authority in the classroom, but it needs to be off to the side so studnets are not crowding around my desk, and taking things that are not theirs. The rug and rocking chair will be in the back corner surrounded by bookcases to make a secluded little cubby for quiet reading.
   c. Classroom rule
      1. Students will raise their hands if they want to speak.
      2. Students will sit in their seat.
      3. Students will only walk in the classroom.
      4. Students will use their inside voices in the classroom and outside voices on the playground
   d. Routines
coming into the classroom at the beginning of the day, students will sign in and stamp their right hand, then they will put their homework folder in the homework folder bin and put their backpack in their cubby, then they will sit at their seat and chose a book to read quietly from the book bin at their desks. Students may go to the bathroom anytime they need. We as adults go to the bathroom when we need to so the students should be able to as well. for lining up the class will line up in alphabetical order, this way they always know where their spot in line is and there is no confusion. for going somewhere students should have their hands either beind their back or in their pockets, this prevents students from touching things they should'nt be touching or pushing other students. They should also have a bubble of air in their mouths so they dont accidently speak out loud while we are in the hallway! In order to get students attention, I will use a signal, for example two fingers in the air, when students see this signal they will know this means to be quiet and pay attention.
   e. List of steps for disruptive behavior
      First is an oral warning
Next students will have to move their name from one color to another
Then a note home about disruptive behavior

  1. It's unfortunate that your teacher has such a negative approach to classroom management. I am not a huge fan of the color changing system because it just doesn't seem to be very effective. My teacher uses color changing as well but also gives the students lots of positive reinforcement which works much better that changing colors. It seems that the students who misbehave and get their color changed don't really care and therefore it does nothing to alter their behavior. I think it is not very effective because teacher don't always clearly explain why students are changing their color or what they can do to get back on green. I really like the idea of having a book for students to read available at their desks. this would give students something to do when they finish work early and just help the class run smoothly.
